Athena Jones - Instructor
“It’s not just about creativity, it’s about the person you’re BECOMING, while you are creating” - Charlie Peacock-
It’s all in the details!
“I am amazing with color, and I see completed pictures in my head. I have always been able to see completed things in detail, such as a painting, a makeover, an outfit for a special occasion, complete with jewelry or anything else that goes with it. I thought everyone did.”
A couple of years ago, after having spent decades participating and mastering the rubber stamping and paper crafting industry, Athena decided she wanted to become a Mixed Media artist. This happened around the same time that she enrolled her youngest child in the Open Classroom School. Two years ago, she painted her first three canvases for a fundraiser silent auction at the O.C. They ended up being the highest bid items in the auction save a trip with JetBlue to Napa Valley. The rest, as they say is history.
Over the last two years, she has painted numerous pieces. Some have been sold at the Festival of Trees. She also has taken first, second and third places in creative arts for the years 2013 – 2014 at the Utah State Fair, and has almost 5000 followers for her art boards on Pintrest.
Her artistic journey began around the age of six. As she tells it, “I used to sit on the back of my grandfather’s laz-e-boy chair, and curl what was left of his hair, and puff powder on his head to keep it from getting too shiny.” At the ripe old age of seven, she ordered by mail, her very first makeup kit which she applied on herself ,her friends, her sisters, and anything that moved, (even the cat!)
Throughout her life, she has been lucky to train, study, certify, and try many hats on. They have included Nail design, at the Professional Nail Academy, (At age 16!) Cosmetology/ makeup artistry at VonCurtis Academy, retail store management and display design at LDS Business College, she then continued her education in the makeup world, with certification eight years in a row from Robert Jones head and founder of the Robert Jones Beauty Academy, a Dallas / NYC based makeup artist who is known nationally for his clients such as Selena Gomez, Shania Twain, Poppy Montgomery, and many others.
Her passion for learning and talent for creating beauty in visual arts has given her a thirst for knowledge, and a love of education and learning.
In the past two years, she has studied art with nationally licensed /branded artists Alisa Burke, Christy Tomlinson, Donna Downey, and Kelly Rae Roberts.
Her most recent adventures have been involved with the Open Classroom school, where she has been a parent, and co-oper, for going on four amazing years. She taught art for the upper (6-8) grades for a 2014, and was the instructor for 8th grade art for 2014, and 2015, as well as several art elective classes, and a makeup class. The 2015 - 2016 school year will be her third year as a substitute teacher at the O.C., and she will also be teaching art in the third / fourth grade.
She feels so blessed to be able to bring her artistic talents, and combine it with her unique ability to connect with these kids. This age can be a tender age, when they are just starting to stretch their wings a little. Not quite young adult, but not a young child any more.
“My philosophy is that EVERYONE is an artist- Whether it’s acting, singing, or painting, or creating their own form of art in math and science.” In creating art, she teaches them they can learn more about themselves and use that expression to connect with others and find joy.
When she sees this, she knows that she was successful in her own form of whole child learning. “At the end of the day, that’s what matters to me. I’m helping to build America’s future by nurturing, and teaching one child at a time.”
“Your story matters. Tell it. Share it. Give it away.”
